A puncture can happen to anyone, but with a bit of know-how you can be rolling again in no time. Here’s a step-by-step guide:
1. Remove the wheel
Rear wheel: Shift into the smallest cog (hardest gear) to make it easier.
Quick-release: Open the lever; release rim brakes if fitted.
Thru-axle/bolted wheels: Use the correct hex key or spanner.
Tip: When removing the rear wheel, pull the derailleur back to ease the wheel out.
2. Deflate the tyre fully
Schrader valve: Press the pin inside.
Presta valve: Unscrew the locknut and press down.
Remove dust caps if fitted.
3. Unseat one side of the tyre
Start opposite the valve.
Use a tyre lever to lift the bead and hook it onto a spoke.
Work around with a second lever until one side is off the rim.
4. Remove the tube and check for damage
Take out the inner tube.
Inflate slightly to find the hole (look, listen, or feel for escaping air).
Check the tyre carefully for sharp objects still inside.
5. Repair or replace the tube
Patch repair: Lightly sand the area, apply glue (or use a self-adhesive patch), press firmly, and let it set.
Replacement: Fit a new tube and repair the old one later if you like.
6. Refit the tube
Insert the valve into the rim hole. Secure with the locknut finger-tight (if Presta).
Tuck the tube into the tyre, adding a little air to help it hold shape.
7. Reseat the tyre
Starting at the valve, push the tyre bead back into the rim with your thumbs.
Check the tube isn’t pinched between rim and tyre.
Use tyre levers gently if needed.
8. Inflate and refit
Inflate gradually, checking the tyre is seated evenly.
Pump to the recommended PSI (printed on the tyre sidewall).
Refit the wheel, tighten the quick release/axle, and reconnect brakes if needed.
Spin the wheel to check everything’s aligned.
And that’s it — puncture fixed. With a little practice, this becomes a quick and confidence-boosting skill that keeps your rides rolling.
