How to Choose the Right Size Road Bike

Buying a new bike should be exciting – but with so many options, it can be hard to know which size is right for you. The good news is that with a few key measurements and an understanding of bike geometry, finding the right fit is simple.

Why Bike Fit Matters

The right size road bike improves comfort, handling, and performance. A bike that’s too big or too small can feel awkward, be harder to control, and may even cause discomfort or injury over time.

Women-Specific Bikes

At Ribble, all our bikes are unisex and customisable. The goal is to ensure your bike fits your body shape, size, and riding style. Adjustments to handlebars, stem, and saddle can all be made for a tailored fit. For female riders, a women’s-specific saddle is also recommended.

What is Bike Geometry?

Geometry describes the lengths and angles that make up a bike frame. These details determine:

  • Frame size – e.g. an XS frame might have a 50.5 cm top tube, while an S has 52.5 cm.

  • Rider position – racers often prefer a low, stretched-out position for aerodynamics, while leisure riders benefit from a more upright stance for comfort.

  • Handling – geometry affects how sharp, stable, or responsive your bike feels.

Step 1: Take Your Measurements

You’ll need your height and inside leg:

  • Height – stand straight against a wall in bare feet and mark the top of your head. Measure from floor to mark.

  • Inside leg – stand against a wall, place a book between your legs, and measure from the top of the book to the floor.

Step 2: Match Your Measurements

On the Ribble website, each bike lists a recommended height range for each frame size. These are based on real-world measurements from customers and staff.

Tip: If you fall between two sizes, it’s usually best to choose the smaller frame. It’s easier to make a slightly smaller bike fit with adjustments (stem length, saddle height, crank size) than to adjust a frame that’s too large.

Step 3: Key Components to Customise

  • Handlebars – width should match your shoulder width (AC joints).

  • Stem – smaller frames use shorter stems; larger frames use longer ones. Stem length can be fine-tuned during a fitting.

  • Saddle – the right width depends on your sit bones. Measuring these helps you choose a saddle that supports your preferred riding position (comfort, endurance, or performance).
