What changed in 2019?
Before June 2019, Cycle to Work vouchers were capped at £1,000. The Department for Transport has since updated its guidance, allowing certificates of any value to be requested.
Why the change?
E-bikes were often excluded from the scheme due to their higher cost. With demand for e-bikes and cycle commuting on the rise, the Cycle to Work Alliance (CTWA) lobbied for more inclusivity. The result? The cap was lifted, and employees can now use the scheme to get market-leading e-bikes like Ribble’s.
Can anyone order a bike over £1,000?
Not automatically. Employers can set their own limits, so before applying for a voucher, always check with your company’s Cycle to Work administrator. They’ll confirm what value is available and guide you through the process.
(If your employer already has FCA authorisation, they may already accept orders above £1,000.)
Why this is great news
E-bikes are transforming the way we travel—but they’re usually more expensive than traditional bikes. Thanks to the changes, you can now use the Cycle to Work scheme to save on a Ribble e-bike and spread the cost more easily.
Is the scheme worth it?
Definitely. Previously, you’d only save on the first £1,000 of your order. Now, you save across the entire value of the bike package, typically between 25–39% off the total. That’s a serious saving on a high-performance Ribble bike.
