Why saddle choice matters
Every rider is built differently, which means the saddle that feels great for one person may be uncomfortable for another. The key is support for your sit bones (pelvic bones). Finding the right width ensures comfort, stability, and efficiency on the bike.
How to measure your sit bones
You can work this out at home with just a few simple items:
A flat bench or chair
A lower footrest (stool, box, or bench)
A piece of corrugated cardboard
A tape measure
Chalk (optional)
Steps:
Place the cardboard on the seat.
Sit on it so it’s directly under your sit bones.
Put your feet on the footrest to mimic your riding position (upright if you prefer comfort, leaning forward if you ride more aggressively).
Stay in position for around 30 seconds.
Stand up and check the cardboard – you should see two indentations from your sit bones.
If they’re faint, rub chalk across the cardboard to bring them out.
Measure the distance between the centres of the two indents – that’s your sit bone width.
Choosing your saddle width
Once you have your measurement, add the following based on your riding style:
Hybrid / Gravel / MTB: add 20 mm – for comfort and stability in a more upright position.
Endurance Road / Gravel: add 10 mm – a balance of comfort and performance.
Every saddle lists its width, so you can match it to your needs and ride style.
