Your Drivetrain is a vital part of the bike.
The drivetrain is the system responsible for transferring your pedalling power into motion, allowing the bike to move efficiently. It enables you to adapt to different terrains, making it easier to climb hills or maintain speed on flat roads. A well-maintained drivetrain ensures smooth shifting, better performance, and longer component life.
The drivetrain consists of a few components:
- The chain
- Crank-set
- Chainrings
- Cassette
- Freehub body
- Bottom bracket.
- Derailleurs
It is best to keep these items clean using a biodegradable cleaner, as the general rule of thumb.
Here are a few good options:
Do not use harsh chemicals such as:
- Diesel
- Brake/ Carburettor cleaner
- alkaline or acidic solvents
- Do not soak these components in a bath of solvents.
Using these products will make the components become brittle and they may break prematurely.
Chain waxing.
If you are considering trying a waxed chain it is best to buy a chain that has been pre-waxed. Converting an oiled chain is possible but it is a lengthy procedure and can place the chain under a lot of stress and cause issues. If you want to do this, make sure to follow the proper guidelines by specific manufactures, offering this conversion.
These items are considered wear and tear and are designed to deteriorate over time but the more you keep them maintained the longer they will last.
