Both the Mahle X20 and X35 eBike systems require period firmware updates. This is normally shown on the bike by a red flashing light on the bike's IWOC. When you connect the bike to the MySmartBike app, the bike should state whether or not the error is caused by the a required update, or an alternative fault.
These updates not only ensure your bikes functions as intended, but also can add new features. As the X20 and X35 systems are quite different, they have separate processes for updating their firmware.
X20
Updating the firmware of your X20 powered eBike is a very simple process. Connect your bike to the MySmartBike app. If an update is required, you should see a section at the top of your phone screen titled 'Software Update'. Press update and the process should start. There may be some further instructions, such as ensuring your bike is on charge, but the app should inform you of these at the time. The link below shows the required process.

X35
The firmware updating process of X35 is quite different compared to that of the X20 system. As the firmware cannot be updated remotely, it must be complete in person by a party with access of the Mahle Dealer app, as well as a GCU cable which interfaces into the charging port of your bike. All of our showrooms can perform this update free of charge, without prior notice. The process takes around 5 to 10 minutes, so it can be complete whilst you wait. Alternatively, any Mahle dealer should be able to perform this service for you.
