A little disc brake rub is common, especially after transport or wheel removal, but it’s quick to fix. Here’s how to get your brakes running silently and smoothly again:
Step 1: Identify the rub
Lift the rear of the bike and spin the wheel.
Listen carefully to locate where the disc is rubbing on the brake pads.
Move the wheel back and forth to confirm it’s rubbing at that point.
Step 2: Check the caliper alignment
Use a torch or slip a piece of paper between the rotor and pads.
If you can’t see light on one side, that’s where the pad is catching.
Step 3: Adjust the caliper
Loosen both caliper bolts slightly — enough for the caliper to move but not hang loose.
Gently reposition the caliper so the rotor sits evenly between both pads.
Hold in place and re-tighten the bolts to the manufacturer’s torque spec.
Step 4: Re-check the wheel
Spin the wheel again to check for rubbing.
If it’s still catching, repeat the adjustment until the rotor runs cleanly between the pads.
And that’s it — no more annoying scraping sound, just smooth, reliable braking.
